Church of Our Saviour
The Church of Our Saviour, Milford’s Episcopal parish, located just off the Oval on Amherst St., has announced its Holy Week and Easter Schedule.
On Palm Sunday, March 16, the parish will participate in an ecumenical Procession on the Oval at 9:30 a.m. At the Procession, palms will be blessed, the triumphal entry gospel read, and hymns and prayers offered. Worshippers will gather at the bandstand, and proceed to the First Congregational Church and the Church of Our Saviour. Following the procession, the Liturgy of Palm Sunday, complete with a dramatic reading of the St. Matthew Passion, will occur at 10:00. An 8:00 liturgy will also be celebrated.
The Holy Eucharist will be offered on Monday and Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. Light breakfast is served following each of these liturgies. On Tuesday evening, March 18, the Office of Tenebrae will be said. A candlelight service dramatizing the Passion, this ancient service consists of readings, psalms and prayers as, one by one, candles at the altar are extinguished.
On Maundy Thursday, March 20, there will be a quiet celebration of the Holy Eucharist at 10:00 a.m. The Liturgy of Maundy Thursday, with the washing of feet, the commemoration of the Last Supper, and the stripping of the altar in preparation for Good Friday, will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. An overnight Gethsemane Watch follows, during which parishioners may “watch in prayer” for one hour as Good Friday approaches.
On Good Friday, March 21, the Solemn Liturgy of Good Friday will be offered at 7:00 p.m. The St. John Passion will be read, and the Solemn Collects offered. The service concludes with the Veneration of the Cross.
The Holy Saturday liturgy, a quiet remembrance of the time Christ lay in the tomb, is offered at 10:00 a.m. on March 22. That evening at 8:00, the celebration of the Resurrection begins with the Great Vigil of Easter, a dramatic service that abounds in ancient imagery. The New Fire of the Resurrection is lit, biblical stories of creation and redemption are told, baptismal vows are renewed, and the first Eucharist of Easter is offered. An agape feast follows.
On Easter Day, March 23, two festive celebrations of the Holy Eucharist are planned. The first, at 8:00 a.m., will feature hymns of the resurrection and a homily by the parish’s rector, the Rev. David G. Robinson, Jr. At the second, 10:00 a.m. service, in addition to the hymns and sermon, the choir will sing, instrumentalists will play, and a full choral Eucharist will be celebrated. Nursery facilities will be available for infants and toddlers at the latter service.
The church is handicapped accessible and all are welcome regardless of denominational background. Information on the church and its programs is available on the Internet at www.coosmilford.org, or by calling the church office at 673-3309.

12th Annual Shabbat Across America Program
Amherst – On Friday night, March 7th members of Amherst’s (and surrounding towns’) Jewish community will gather at Congregation Betenu in an unparalleled display of Jewish revitalization and Jewish unity. Conceived and organized by the National Jewish Outreach Program (NJOP) in 1997, Shabbat Across America/Canada represents a united effort by the entire Jewish community to renew interest in the fourth of the Ten Commandments – observing a weekly day of rest (Shabbat in Hebrew).
Congregation Betenu will be one of approximately 700 synagogues across the continent that will simultaneously open its doors to practicing and non-practicing Jews alike, so they may join together to experience and rejoice in a traditional Shabbat service and festive meal. Over 600,000 people have participated in Shabbat Across America/Canada in the past. Led by Rabbi Joshua Segal, attendees will experience an interactive Friday night Explanatory Service and a traditional Shabbat dinner with all the rituals explained. The event will take place at 6 p.m.
