Souhegan Roars Back Over Pembroke (6-4)
Playoff hockey arrived at the Cyclones Arena in Hudson last night and the skating sabers of Souhegan high school came back from an early (0-2) deficit to defeat Pembroke Academy (6-4).
With five minutes remaining in period one, Robbie Maguire finished off a nice passing play by Cole Johnson and Geoff Crawford to get the black and gold on the board (1-2).
Paul Caso would then tip home an Alex April blast (2-2) with .22 seconds left in the first stanza.
Just 31 seconds into the 2nd period Caso would convert again from April in this spirited affair. With 3 minutes remaining in the period Caso got hooked on a breakaway, but with the delayed call Adam Mendenhall wristed home Casos rebound to put SHS up by two (4-2). Pesky Pembroke would not go away as Marc Racine blasted a slapper past Nate Downer (30 saves) with under a minute to play (4-3) in the second stanza.
Mendenhall would strike again converting a give and go with Caso to put SHS up (5-3).
Racine and the Spartans of Pembroke again came back to close the gap to one (5-4) with 9:15 remaining in regulation time. Souhegan was determined to win this game as Caso quickly responded to the P.A. tally converting a pass from Mendenhall to close the scoring (6-4) at 8:32 of period three.
Coach Coughlin gave credit to a complete team effort following the win, “I thought that everybody contributed to this win. It was high school playoff hockey at it’s best”.
Souhegan (15-3 record) advances to the semi finals at Concords Everrett Arena on Wednesday at 5 PM vs Laconia.
