Martha McDowell, White House Garden Historian

A Look into All the Presidents' Gardens

HOLLIS – Each President leaves a personal imprint not only on the Office but on the White House itself. Garden historian Marta McDowell will be speaking about her bestselling book All the Presidents’ Gardens on April 7th at 2:00 pm at the Hollis Brookline High School. The book explores the untold history of the White House grounds. From George Washington’s seed collecting to Michelle Obama’s vegetable gardens, it traces the story of how presidents and their families have left their imprint on the eighteen acres surrounding the executive mansion. Learn fascinating tidbits about Lincoln’s goats, Ike’s putting green, Jackie’s iconic roses, and Amy Carter’s tree house.

All The Presidents’ Gardens made the New York Times bestseller list in 2015 and won an American Horticultural Society book award. The book features new and historical photographs and art.  Her book will be for sale and she will be available to autograph.

Marta McDowell teaches landscape history and horticulture at The New York Botanical Garden, where she studied landscape design. Her garden is included in the Smithsonian’s Archive of American Gardens and in 2018 she will be gardener-in-residence at the Emily Dickinson Museum in Amherst. Her particular interest is in authors and their gardens, exploring the connection between the pen and the trowel. She has written a number of books on the subject such as Beatrix Potter’s Gardening Life.

This event is sponsored jointly by the Colonial Garden Club of Hollis, the Merrimack Garden Club, the Milford Garden Club and the Nashua Garden Club. These clubs have come together in order to bring a nationally known author and speaker to the public at an affordable price.
